Freshness
I decided I was going to make tacos again for dinner (it was just me this time). I wante make the taco seasoning myself, so I found some ideas and adapted it a little - no more packetd to mix for me!
Taco Seasoning:
2 tsp chili powder
1 1/2 tsp of paprika
1 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 tsp garlic salt
3/4 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
Brown your ground beef (or other meat), add the mixture and start adding a cup of water (little at a time) and start combining the two. The water will mix and evaporate while the meat and seasoning combine and smell great! You can omit the cayenne pepper or add more for more bite, but I found it was just right.
Of course tacos aren't tacos without the cheese, lettuce, onion, tomatoe and some sour cream - yum!
Over the last while, I've been trying to make an effort to lower the amount of pre-made stuff, and increase the amount of fresh ingredients. It's a little more prep (and practice), but I think it makes for a better dinner. Obviously, issues of veggies not keeping long is still alive and well, but the faster you turn things around the less it occurs. I think it's an all or none idea, in that you have to start commiting to using most of everything fresh to keep the turn around fast otherwise things go bad. I only just bought some green onions yesterday, and they're already soft - grrrr.
I've been thinking about investing a little more into the culinary arts by taking a course in cooking at Algonquin . This course runs from January to April, every Saturday from 9am-230pm, so it's quite a bit longer than any of my previous cooking classes. It's also quite a bit more in price, but I'm thinking it would be a worth while investment. Still pondering...
I went shopping for a gift for my mothers birthday, but I got nowhere. A few ideas, she mentioned trying out Vonage VoIP, but that could end up a nightmare for me ;) . Perhaps assembling a 'date night' either in a basket or perhaps a first aid kit (dinner+movie)? Of course while shopping the Futureshop had the Firefly dvd set on sale for 23 bucks!! I had to get it, since I've never seen i
t so cheap! I also picked up a new DVD, Inside Man, as I was shopping. I may give it to my mother as a gift, or keep it myself - I haven't really decided. I recall the previews intrigued me, so I grabbed this loss leader and walked out the door (paying of course).
Work has been okay lately, busy, but okay. I'm working on a number of support issues which have come up (some related to my group, some not) and I hope to get back to my main project soon (please or please). Speaking of work, I've noticed that the quality of food from our 'caf' is rather low. I spent (and am spending) an unfortunate amount of time in the bathroom. The debreziner sausage would make any german cringe - and somehow that sausage in a bun, with a salad cost $5.00 - total rip off. I think I may have to get aggressive about my lunch if I'm to save my ass and my wallet.
Tacos for lunch it seems :)

Yeah Firefly is awesome! Almost as good as Battlestar Galactica!
As to the caf, Rob comes back on Monday, so perhaps we'll see a return to a bit of quality.
My lovely wife recommends that you replace the onion powder with chunks of real onion, or throw in some salsa which has onion in it (even better).
Health Warning: Onion may case Explosive Reactions
Mother of Mercy, there is no God.
