Operation Dinner Out.
The wife and I went to dinner tonight, using a gift certificate we aquired a long while ago. The restaurant was Big Daddy's Crab Shack and Oyster Bar. Each time we've gone in the past, the restaurant was packed, with hour long waits to get a table. Many people have raved about the place, so we went with great expectations in our minds. For starters we ordered crab cakes and calamari, for myself and the wife. Britgal enjoyed the calamari and noted it was nice and spicy. My crab cakes were ok, but they were served in a bowl of what they called creole sauce. The sauce took the crunchiness of the cake away. The meat was ok, but hard to really enjoy due to the large amount of sauce.
The mains were a sampler plater and the 'special of the day', peacan crusted salmon. Both were good, but again, the use of the creole sauce seemed a little excessive. Now had that been the end of the story, I would say it was a nice place to go for a chance of pace. But the service we got, on a rather slow evening, was horrible. No personallity, no desire to ensure our satisfaction, and about 15 mins minimum to get any request fulfilled.
To pay, we had one $100 gift certificate and a 10$ promo gift card. The server said she couldn't refund the 10$ card since it was promotional, but she could give us the difference from the $100 one. So we assumed, like most would I think, that she would apply the 10$ card first, then the remainder of the total applied to the 100$ to maximize our return. Instead we lost our 10$ card somehow, and got $10 back in change. We left no tip - stupidity like that is not acceptable to me and people that insist on being idiots deserve to get nothing.
I'm just bitter.

In the future I would recommend staying in and enjoying some cheesy garlic pasta with crispy red pepper.
I've really enjoyed going to Big Daddy's. I haven't found that the service is bad generally; sometimes you just get a bad server.
And the food is really good.
Mmmmmmmmmmmm, seafood.
The food was good. The fish was nice, but the cream sauce on everything was kinda sick. I would have prefered a lighter sauce, perhaps one of citrus etc.
I agree that bad service does occur no matter where you go, but at $100 for two people, I can't imagine I should be tolerate of such mishaps.
Still - good food.
