a trisket , a trasket, check out my hanging basket!

So on my way home my wife and I decide to see if we can find the mysterious hanging basket, which is supposed to make up for the pot rack (you know the rack is coming, it's just a matter of time). We checked out Homesense to see if we could catch a break. No go, but Britgal did pickup some cheap mini cake pans and some dark wood thai dish which looks like a triple lumpy poop.

One store Britgal though would likely have a basket (as she thinks she saw one) was Linens 'n Things. Now, I've walked past this store (it's on Merivale in the same strip plaza as BestBuy) lots of times, but I always assumed it was just textiles and other sundries. Doubt entered my mind, but we walked in and I was floored by what I saw. This store is like Home Outfitters, but way, way better. It's like the superstore of Home Outfitters - their kitchen area is incredible and they even carry some of the higher end cookware (note: another new store I discoved in the Ikea mall, Linen Chest, also carries much high end kitchen gear such as All Clad, Le Creuset and Henckels etc), but still within reasonable prices. We found the hanging basket, which I quickly installed. I'm hoping to make good use out of it to hold onions, garlic, shallots and other dry goods.

YLLAN mentioned that I should start playing Magic: The Gathering again. I'll have to dust off my cards and refresh my memory for the rules. I'm still unsure if I wish to play, but the my curiosity is starting to peek a little. I do remember having fun, and the strategy was ok (though chance plays a tad too much in the game if you ask me), but the artwork was pretty cool. Looking over the website for Wizards of the Coast, I can see they've changed the artwork for some cards, such as Serra Angels. The original had a more cartoon look to it, but now the artwork seems a little more like an oil painting. I'll take a peek at my collection and see if any of it tickles my fancy. It has been a while since I have 'gamed' in any kind of way (D&D etc), so I'm not sure if I'll still enjoy it or not. I must say that creating a deck of annoyance sure does appeal to me though . Perhaps I'll even make a /dev/null deck, where things just end up into the bit bucket... mmm themes are fun and safe for kids too! Though the last thing I need is another nasty habit to spend money on. I have cards, yes, but I'm sure I wouldn't mind getting a few new ones since apparently there have been a lot of new series (20+ I think) since I've played. Hopefully, they haven't made too many cards that make the game unbalanced. I'm glad the rules book is online, I recall they used to pack a mini book into the larger decks you could buy. Hard on the eyes, and only midgets could turn the freaking page!

mmmm... midgets.

The game hasn't become unbalanced, but the balance has changed. They've explored a lot more of the possibility space within the rules; things are quite doable now that would have seemed shockingly bizarre when I first started. They've also gotten better about defining what abilities belong to what colours (ie, no more Tims, as direct damage is red, not blue).

When Eighth Edition came out they changed the face of the cards to be more clear and better looking. Any card published (with a few exceptions) is still playable, though. The artwork has definitely gotten better. Take a look through the Kamigawa sets; the art just blows me away.

They also started selling pre-made decks that are playable out of the box. There's more info on the website. They're a pretty good way of getting a playable deck started without spending a truckload of cash.

Give in to the dark side, Luke.
